Ayurveda: The Science of Life

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest systems of natural wellbeing. Originating in India more than 5,000 years ago, its name comes from the Sanskrit words Ayur (life) and Veda (knowledge), often translated as “the science of life”.

Rather than focusing solely on illness, Ayurveda takes a holistic view of health, recognising the connection between body, mind and spirit. Its aim is to create balance, supporting wellbeing through lifestyle, appropriate nutrition, daily practices and natural therapies.

“The treatments I received were carefully tailored to suit my request for calm and peace. They have definitely eased my body and help relax my mind. My final treatment with Akshara was wonderful – the best yet!” Yvette, UK

Ayurveda and India Calling

Ayurveda is woven through the India Calling experience, implementing the yoga, breathwork, meditation, and cultural exploration that form the heart of the journey.

Our aim is not simply to introduce Ayurvedic concepts but to offer opportunities to experience them in a practical and accessible way. Whether you are completely new to Ayurveda or already familiar with its principles, this journey provides a unique opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners in the country where Ayurveda originated.

“According to Ayurvedic principles, by understanding oneself, by identifying one’s own constitution, and by recognising sources of doshic aggravation, one can not only follow the proper guidelines to cleanse, purify and prevent disease, but also uplift oneself into a realm of awareness previously unknown.” Dr Vasant Lad

Balance and Individuality

Central to Ayurveda is the concept that each person is unique. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, Ayurvedic practitioners consider the individual as a whole, recognising the connection between body, mind, and spirit.

Ayurveda places great importance on balance, focusing on prevention, rejuvenation, and addressing the underlying causes of imbalance. Through personalised guidance and therapies, it seeks to support long-term well-being and vitality.

“Health is not mere absence of disease. It is the dynamic expression of life.” Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
